A Sense of Self: The Role of Race & Gender in Decolonization and Community with Scott Okamoto

In this session, Scott will contrast how he saw himself in rooms where he was not in the majority, racially, with how he sees himself now.

This will shed light on both how the majority culture often disregards BIPOC men and how we often harbor the same small stature in our own minds. It takes White and BIPOC colonized minds for White supremacy to flourish, and Evangelical culture is a greenhouse for White Supremacy. This, sadly, also exists in Ex-Evangelical spaces. 

He will also share the blind spots of privilege he holds and needs to be aware of as he navigates life in his communities post-faith. The happy conclusion to all this is that there are vibrant, loving communities to be formed and found.

Overcoming Toxic Religious Shame

Many people internalize the toxic religious message that they are intrinsically bad, absent of inherent worth, and repulsive to God in their natural state. Religious doctrines such as "original sin", teach that our sin-nature is so bad that it left God no choice but to brutalize and kill his only son. Toxic religion teaches there is nothing good inside of us and we cannot trust our own thoughts, feelings, and ability to direct our own lives.

The foundation of deconstruction is cultivating a new kind of relationship with yourself. The centerpiece of that foundation is self-acceptance. In this session, we will deconstruct the false ideas that feed into toxic religious shame, and explore how to cultivate a new relationship with yourself through radical self-acceptance.

The pen is more powerful than the sword. A picture is worth a thousand words. Can art create change? I say yes!

Even though I had been blogging for a couple of years as the NakedPastor, it was when I started drawing cartoons to convey meaning that things started happening. We can scroll past written posts that we don’t like or disagree or are bored with. But when we see an image, like one of my cartoons, it’s already too late. In a split second, the art bypasses our intellectual biases and all our defense mechanisms and goes straight for the heart of our being.

This is how transformation can happen and we can become a new creation… not only in ourselves but in our communities and in the world! My book Flip It Like This! is a good example that illustrates how art can swiftly overturn tables.
